The Black Family Our Time Together CD. Released 2004.

In early 2003, the five of us huddled around a loudspeaker in a recording studio in Dublin. The sound coming from the speaker was the voice of our mother, Patty Black, singing the songs that were familiar; songs that had been sung to us from when we where children. The voice was frailer than we remembered; yet it was still brimful with humour, joy and mischief.

Mammy sang when she was happy, sad, exhilarated or bereaved. In her last months, during times of confusion and when having difficulty remembering the names of her children and completing full sentences, she could recall all the verses of songs she had learned in childhood. Singing was a constant in her life, and her love of music she generously shared with everyone who came into contact with her.

By singing to us, her children and grandchildren, she gave us a precious gift.

We remember you for many things, Mammy, your devotion to family, your kindness and generosity to neighbours and friends and your enthusiasm for life, but passing on to us your love of singing was priceless and immeasurable. We will always treasure your gift. We dedicate this album of songs to your memory.

Here's to You, Mam, and our time together.
